The US House of Representatives passed a bill requiring TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell to a US company or face a national “ban”. It is hard to say what will happen to it in the US Senate.
But it goes further than that. The bill, as it stands, would allow the US president to designate non-US social media apps as national security threats, forcing them to ensure they have no ties to a “US adversary” within six months.
There is much to unwrap in that sentence, to say nothing of its interference with free speech.
I do not have an opinion regarding TicToc. I do not use it for the same reason I will not load the Facebook app on my phone.
