Repatriating Art
2024 promises to be an angst-filled year. So I wanted to begin the year looking back at some of the good things that have happened in 2023. Starting this week with the art world.
In 2016, I was at the ruins of Xanthos, Turkey. The buried site of Xanthos was located in 1838 by Sir Charles Fellows. Of course, he hauled much of what he found back to Britain.
While I was there, a sheep herder sitting on a stone, who did not speak a word of English, nor do I speak Turkish, was very vocal about the archeological site. The only thing I understood that he repeated again and again as he pointed to various places within the ruins was “British Museum.”
